On Thursday 26th November, Womensport NSW in partnership with Marrickville Council hosted a Schoolgirls Get Active Event at Marrickville Oval and Tennis Centre. The girls listened to champion female athletes speak about their sporting achievements and barriers faced. Athletes on the panel included; Lisa Sthalekar (Cricket), Lael Kassem (AFL), Janessa Pe (Martial Arts), Peti Talanoa (Netball) and Maddie Studdon (Rugby League). Barbara Barkley was the Master of Ceremonies and schools that attended the event included Marrickville High and Athena School in Newtown. President Susan Horwitz encouraged the girls to get involved and spoke about the benefits of the Womensport NSW Girls Get Active Days and inspiration of having the female athletes attend these type of events. Councilor Rosana Tyler officially opened the event and also recognised the importance of the event and girls involvement in Sport.
Following the athlete panel the girls braved the heat to participate in active sporting stations and were lucky enough to have the development coaches from some of the State Sporting Organisations run the activities. Sports showcased on the day included; Tennis, Cricket, Netball, Rugby League, AFL, Martial Arts and Rugby Union. Fortunately some of the athletes stayed on to mentor the girls and be involved in their representative sports. All the girls received a show bag at the end of the day to encourage active and continued participation in sport through local club based programs .
